How to get rid of a keloid scar?

Number of readers: 124093

A keloid is a benign skin condition. It sometimes occurs that during the healing of a lesion, the skin does not progress normally. Swellings arise, creating a scar with more significant volume, an outgrowth of skin that is red or darker in colour depending on one's skin tone. An injection of Kenacort may help to eliminate them.

What is a keloid scar ?

A keloid scar is a scar that is raised with a colour ranging from white, pink, red, to brown. It is the result of a very specific scar formation process at the dermis level. While a scar typically remains relatively flat, a keloid scar develops in relief. Initially, a small bump of brown-red colour develops. The nodule thickens and expands. The keloid scar can extend from a few millimetres to several centimetres.

This scar is referred to as a fibroproliferative scar. It is caused by an abnormal proliferation of skin tissue. Certain skin cells, called fibroblasts, produce too much collagen. The accumulation of collagen leads to thickening of the skin tissue and the development of the keloid scar. They are often more common in joint areas and arise following shingles, skin trauma, an incision, acne spots, or an insect bite. It is also noted that individuals with black skin or of Asian descent are frequently affected by keloid scars.

Why choose Kenacort injection?

Generally, in cases of the presence of a keloid scar, Kenacort injections are recommended to treat them. This is a steroidal anti-inflammatory that belongs to the family of synthetic corticosteroids. These injections should be performed by a doctor or a surgeon six months or a year after the scar appears. Often, three injection sessions spaced one or two months apart are sufficient to significantly reduce the keloid scar.

This involves an injection with a micro-syringe or dermojet, which appears like a pen-type syringe without a needle. This method is used to inject corticosteroids such as Kenacort into the scar. The corticosteroids are injected over the entire length of the dermis of the scar.

Pressotherapy with silicone wax bands may help prevent this type of keloid scar. In any case, if you have a keloid scar, do not hesitate to consult a professional to establish an accurate diagnosis and assess the possibilities and implications available to you.
