Countering hirsutism with laser hair removal

Number of readers : 13303

In 10% of women, hair grows in typical male hair growth areas such as the chin, belly button, or back. This condition, known as hirsutism, can be quite bothersome and lead to self-consciousness. To address this, laser hair removal can be a particularly appealing alternative, allowing you to regain your full femininity and greater comfort.

What is hirsutism ?

Hirsutism is a complex hormonal issue. It refers to the abnormal appearance of male-pattern hair growth in women. Hair grows inappropriately in specific body areas. Hirsutism can be linked to elevated levels of male hormones or a heightened sensitivity of hair follicles to these hormones.

This disorder can significantly impair quality of life and may lead to considerable psychological distress in women. In 7 out of 10 cases, hirsutism, combined with irregular periods, is associated with a hormonal imbalance in the ovaries. Consequently, women produce excessive androgens, the hormones responsible for male sexual characteristics such as body hair. An excess of these hormones results in the growth of dark, coarse hair in unusual areas.

What is laser hair removal ?

The laser was commercially introduced in 1995; however, it gained significant traction the following year due to further studies. Since then, this technique has proven effective and is highly sought after by those looking to manage their hair growth. Permanent hair removal targets the hair system to prevent regrowth. It involves destroying the hair follicle through its melanin (pigment). The laser emits heat to raise the temperature of the hair to about 70°C. The hair will then be eradicated, and the treated germinative area will be sterilised, preventing new hairs from taking root, with no damage to the skin. This process is known as selective photothermolysis.

The principle is to destroy the hair at its root using a laser light beam laser. This allows for the destruction of hair in just a few sessions, leaving no scars. Generally, an average of 5 sessions is required, although several factors may influence the total, such as puberty, menopause, age, skin type, etc. Depending on the areas treated, multiple sessions will be needed; for example, 5 sessions for the chin, with several weeks in between each.

Why choose laser hair removal ?

It is essential to schedule a prior appointment with a “laser specialist” before undergoing any hair removal procedure. While permanent hair removal is suitable for certain hair and skin types, some revolutionary latest-generation lasers can treat all skin types, from the lightest to the darkest, ensuring effectiveness and safety.

Please don’t hesitate to consult a professional to consider laser hair removal if your hair is causing you significant distress!
